The 16th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII16) will take place at UN Headquarters in New York from 24 April to 5 May 2017. More than 1,000 indigenous participants are expected to attend the Session, making it not only one of the most culturally diverse United Nations meetings, but also one of the largest public gatherings at the United Nations Head Quarters every year. The Special Theme this year is: “Tenth Anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: measures taken to implement the Declaration”. The Declaration, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 13 September 2007, was a historical achievement after more than 25 years of negotiations. By resolution 71/258, the General Assembly decided to convene in 2017 a United Nations Conference to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination. The Assembly encouraged all Member States to participate in the Conference and decided that it shall convene in New York with the participation and contribution of international organizations and civil society representatives. The Conference will be held in New York from 27 to 31 March and from 15 June to 7 July. - 3 - 7 April: 50th Session of the Commission on Population
- and Development (CPD50)
The 50th session of the Commission on Population and Development will be held at United Nations Headquarters from 3-7 April 2017. Chaired by the Ambassador of Qatar, the session will provide Member States with the the opportunity to discuss issues related to the special theme of the session "Changing population age structures and sustainable development". They will also engage in informal consultations on a draft resolution on the special theme and draft decisions.
This year, the Commission is celebrating its 50th session as well as the 70th anniversary of the first session of its predecessor, the Population Commission, which met for the first time in 1947. Representatives of non-governmental organizations had the opportunity to submit written statements and will be given the floor to make oral presentations. The 16th session of the Committee of Experts on Public Administration of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will be held from 24 to 28 April 2017 at the United Nations Headquarters, in New York.
The main issue for discussion will be “Ensuring effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals: leadership, action and means.” The five sub-issues will be:
1. Understanding the needs of local authorities and communities and supporting and equipping them for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals;
2. Institutional leadership and the Sustainable Development Goals;
3. Institutional arrangements for the Sustainable Development Goals;
4. Development of principles of effective governance;

The Twelfth Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF12) will be held in New York, from 1-5 May 2017. The Forum welcomes the participation of the nine major groups as identified in Chapter 23 of Agenda 21, including: women, children and youth, indigenous people, non-governmental organizations, local authorities, workers and trade unions, business and industry, scientific and technological communities, farmers and small forest landowners.

The Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the 2020 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) will hold its first session from 2 to 12 May 2017 at the Vienna International Centre. This meeting is the first of three sessions that will be held prior to the 2020 Review Conference. - 5 May: Webinar on ECOSOC Consultative Status (11:00a.m. to 12:30p.m. NY Time)
In preparation for the 1 June deadline to apply for consultative status with ECOSOC, the NGO Branch is pleased to invite interested NGOs to an informational session about the application process. The event will be held on-line on 5 May 2017 at 11:00am to 12:30pm (NY Time) and will be conducted in English.
The meeting will provide answers to the following questions:
- What is consultative status, which organizations are eligible and what are its benefits
- How the entire application process works starting when the application is submitted to the NGO Branch until ECOSOC makes its final decision
- The main components of the application package

The 2017 Integration Segment of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will take place from 8 to 10 May 2017 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The Segment will be chaired by His Excellency Mr. Nabeel Munir, Vice-President of ECOSOC (Pakistan). The Segment will address the theme “Making eradication of poverty an integral objective of all policies: what will it take?”
The 2017 ECOSOC Integration Segment will serve as a platform for key stakeholders to identify and discuss opportunities and challenges in developing integrated approaches to tackle poverty in a sustained, inclusive and sustainable manner. The meeting will consider best practices, lessons learned and recommendations at the national, regional and international levels, with a view to extract policy recommendations to guide integrated policymaking for poverty eradication as an integral part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Its proceedings will be available for consideration by Member States in the 2017 ECOSOC High-level Segment and the 2017 High-level political forum under the auspices of ECOSOC, to take place in July 2017. Relevant policy recommendations may be reflected in the Ministerial Declaration as the main outcome document at the culmination of the ECOSOC cycle.

In accordance with United Nations General Assembly resolution 71/1, the "New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants," a preparatory process will soon begin for the intergovernmental negotiations of a global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration, to be adopted at an intergovernmental conference on international migration in 2018.
As part of the preparatory process for the global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration, the President of the General Assembly (PGA) will organize a series of informal thematic sessions between April 2017 and November 2017, as well as four days of informal interactive multi-stakeholder hearings between April 2017 and June 2018.
The first thematic session on "Human rights of all migrants" will be held in Geneva on 8-9 May 2017. This thematic session will focus on the human rights of all migrants, social inclusion, cohesion, and all forms of discrimination, including racism, xenophobia and intolerance. Registration for the thematic session for representatives of organizations accredited through the special accreditation process and of NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC will open shortly. - 15 - 16 May: Second Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the SDGs
The second annual Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals will be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, on May 15 and 16, 2017. The following topic may be considered for the STI Forum 2017: "Science, Technology and Innovation for a Changing World - Focus on SDGs 1, 2, 3, 5, 9, and 14". At its 2017 Resumed Session, the Committee on NGOs will consider new applications for status by NGOs as well as applications deferred from earlier sessions. It will also review quadrennial reports of NGOs in general or special consultative status. The Committee is expected to meet again on 12 June 2017 to adopt its report of the session. This session's recommendations will be sent to the Economic and Social Council for its approval in July 2017. - 22 - 25 May: 2017 Financing for Development (FfD) Forum
The second FfD Forum will be convened by the President of ECOSOC from 22 to 25 May 2017 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Building on the inaugural FfD Forum, which devoted particular attention to setting up the monitoring framework for the follow-up to the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (Addis Agenda), the 2017 Forum is expected to provide impetus for the implementation of FfD outcomes and the delivery of means of implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. - 31 May: 2017 Special Meeting of ECOSOC on "Innovations in Infrastructure Development and Promoting Sustainable Industrialization"
The President of ECOSOC will highlight the relevance of industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG-9) to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda by convening a Special Meeting of the Council on 31 May 2017 at UN Headquarters in New York. Resilient infrastructure and sustainable industrialization are key enablers of poverty eradication and can promote inclusion, connectivity and equality within societies. However, it can be complex and expensive to develop, especially in countries in Africa and countries in special situations.
The Special Meeting will aim to bring the challenges involved to the attention of national, regional and international actors, and to forge solutions to bridge the gaps in infrastructure and industrialization across countries. This is an initiative supported by a range of UN entities including FAO, OHRLLS, OSAA, UNCTAD, UNDP, UNECA, UNHABITAT, UNIDO and WIPO, and engaging other organizations such as the African Development Bank, the Africa Union, NEPAD and representatives from academia, civil society and the private sector. - 5 - 9 June: United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
A high-level United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development will be convened in New York, from 5 to 9 June 2017, coinciding with World Oceans Day, to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14. The Conference will be co-hosted by the Governments of Fiji and Sweden.
The Conference shall comprise plenary meetings, partnership dialogues and a special event commemorating World Oceans Day. The Conference shall adopt by consensus a concise, focused, intergovernmentally agreed declaration in the form of a "Call for Action" to support the implementation of Goal 14 and a report containing the co-chairs’ summaries of the partnership dialogues, as well as a list of voluntary commitments for the implementation of Goal 14, to be announced at the Conference.

- organizations that are in consultative status with ECOSOC;

The 10th session of the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD (COSP10) will take place from 13 to 15 June 2017 at UN Headquarters in New York. The COSP has grown to be one of the world's largest and most diverse disability meetings. The main theme of COSP10 is: “The Second Decade of the CRPD: Inclusion and full participation of persons with disabilities and their representative organizations in the implementation of the Convention” along with three sub-themes.
A day prior to the opening of the main Conference, a Civil Society Forum will be organized by NGOs. Online registration for NGOs in Consultative Status with ECOSOC and for NGOs Accredited to the COSP is currently open (15 March to 2 June). Accreditation for new NGOs (1 April to 5 May) and the application for side-events (1 April to 15 May) is now also open.
